During the renovation, the arena received a new grandstand roof made of Makrolon ® multiwall sheets. This idea was no acci- dent, as the previous roof had also been made of high-tech plastic. Even after years of use, the sheets showed only barely visi- ble scratches and faint loss of colour. Ap- proximately 36,000 square metres of floor space were covered with white-coloured multiwall sheets with a width of 1.20 me- tres, a length of 9.80 metres and a thick- ness of 25 millimetres. This corresponds to an area of more than three football pitches, with around 30 trucks needed to transport the material to Moscow. The X-structure of the Makrolon ® multi- wall sheet provides high stability in wind and weather and withstands even high snow loads of up to one tonne per square metre. Moreover, the polycarbonate sheets are protected against the weather for 25 years thanks to new additives and a spe- cial UV coating. Other advantages are the high fire protection properties and cost savings of 40 to 45% versus a glass roof construction. A new national stadium for the football Euro League 2012 The National Stadium, Lia Manoliu in Bu- charest, Romania was rebuilt especially for the 2012 Euro League Final. Here, it was especially important to bring functionality and design in line to meet the project brief in full. Makrolon ® solid sheets proved to be the material of choice, as they are very transparent, offer a great deal of design freedom and are ideally suited to harmo- nizing functionality and aesthetics. The 8 millimetres thick solid sheets are 12 metres long and were fitted as singles units. Football Euro 2012: Makrolon® sets new standards in Gdansk The “PGE Arena Gdansk” was produced with more than 45,000 square metres of special stadium sheet from Makrolon ® . The Gdansk sports facility used the polycar- bonate sheet as both grandstand roofing and outer shell, giving a combination that had never existed before. In addition, every single sheet coloured in six different shades ranging from white to dark amber, gives the arena the characteristic of the region. Am- ber, the gold of the Baltic Sea, was chosen as the colour theme according to the wishes of the designers. Conclusion Ecological and economic construction is no longer conceivable today without plas- tics. Most advantages of transparent plas- tic sheets are in stark contrast to glass: low weight, good formability and high light transmission. Finally, even at the end of their lifetime, polycarbonate sheets can also be professionally recycled.
