With the exception of a Covid break in 2020, NFL games have taken place in London every year since then. Logically, the pandemic interrupted the international matches in all four leagues. Lockdowns, spectator restrictions and travel restrictions made it impossible to play outside the USA. The NFL was the first of the leagues to venture across the pond again. In 2021, it continued the “NFL London Games” – as they have officially been called since 2017. The two indoor leagues NBA and NHL waited a year longer. Another year later – in 2023 – the MLB went on the road again. American Football in London and Frankfurt With regard to the upcoming or, in the case of the MLB, already ongoing season, numerous trips are or were again on the agenda for various teams. The NFL will come to Europe for five games this autumn. The first game will be played by the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons at London’s Wembley Stadium on 1 October, followed by two games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 8 and 15 October. One month later, the NFL will make another stop in Germany. On 5 and 12 November, two regular season games will take place in Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park. Normally, the league’s Germany contract provides for one game per season on German soil until 2025. Due to the fact that the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City is being rebuilt for the FIFA World Cup 2026, no Mexico Game can take place this season – which is why the league has moved the game to Germany. The success of the very first regular season game in Germany was certainly a major factor in this decision. While the NFL has to take a break this year with the Mexico Game, the MLB has already had its Mexico appearance. At the end of April, games took place in the Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú. Two months later, the MLB squad of the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants made their way to London to play two games at London Stadium. Ice hockey in Australia The NBA will also be heading to Mexico and Europe in the coming season. A regular season game is planned in Paris and Mexico City. In both cases, neither the teams nor the venue or date are known. Already at the beginning of the year – but in the past season – the league played a Paris Game at the Accor Arena in Paris. Before the season gets underway, however, the official preseason is on the agenda. As part of the preseason, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks will travel to the Middle East and play each other twice at the Etihad Arena. The NHL is also already on the road during their preseason. Both the Arizona Coyotes and the Los Angeles Kings are heading “Down Under” for two matches in September. Both matches will be played in the Rod Laver Arena – the main stadium of the Australian Open tennis tournament. In the regular season, four teams will travel to Sweden to play a total of four matches – each team will play twice – in Stockholm’s Avicii Dome.
