The Kai Tak Sports Park in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is one of the most expensive sports facilities in the world, and a stadium costing billions of euros is currently being built in Xi’an. In addition, the New Workers’ Stadium was recently completed in Beijing. In the former British colony of Hong Kong, the construction of a sports complex is currently underway. Around the centrepiece of the project, the 50,000-seat Main Stadium, there will also be an indoor sports centre, a park, an event village, a health and wellness centre as well as Kai Tak Sports Avenue and a public sports facility. At a cost of 3.5 billion euros, the Populous-designed complex will be an “urban oasis” to meet the needs of the population, professional athletes and amateurs. The sports complex is scheduled to open its doors as early as 2024. Another billion-euro project is under construction in Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province. Originally planned for the Asian Cup 2023, the Xi’an International Football Centre (China had to withdraw later because of ongoing covid issues) is visually distinguished above all by its curved lines on the façade, which are intended to make the stadium less susceptible to north winds.
