Ice arenas: Technology modernisations

The modern ice arena must always keep in mind the latest technological standards. On the one hand, to keep up with the competition, and on the other, to offer fans and visitors the best possible experience. A brief overview of selected projects since 2020.

Whereas decades ago it was largely all about the sport, nowadays the fan experience is playing an increasingly important role, also due to technological developments. Be it through new, bigger and better video displays for instant replays or the involvement of fans in the framework program, or the implementation of powerful networks so that fans can always be online with a good connection and share their experiences inside the arena with the outside world, or use the latest technologies such as virtual or augmented reality in the arena.

But the improved fan experience is not the only reason for technological upgrades; the sustainability factor also plays an important role. For example, arenas are upgrading to more environmentally friendly LED technologies. For example, the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin installed a high-performance, more energy-efficient, full-colour LED lighting system. With the change of the lighting system, the arena will reduce electricity consumption for sports lighting at ice hockey, basketball and handball games by about 30 % in the future, says General Manager Ole Hertel.

The Corona pandemic also partially influenced modernisation work in the arenas. Security and hygiene concepts had to be worked out and appropriate solutions were to be found. From contactless payment and the installation of digital signage to autonomous UV floor scrubbers and drone desinfection technologies – such as at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, USA – to keep the risk of infection as minimal as possible.

The reasons for constant technological improvement in today’s multifunctional arenas are many. In some cases, even unforeseeable factors – such as the Corona pandemic – play a decisive role in further development within the industry. (STADIAWORLD, 16.08.2022)
