Olympic Complex ready with 100 days to go to AIMAG 2017

With the 100-Day Countdown for the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) around the corner, the state-of-the art Ashgabat Olympic Complex, is ready for the big event.

The complex, which covers a total area of 1,466,400 m², includes over 30 different sites, including 13 competition venues, 5 training venues and the Athletes Village, which will host the athletes, team officials, and over 1000 international technical officials. The newly built Ashgabat Olympic Stadium, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies, takes centre stage in the Ashgabat Olympic Complex featuring a modern design which pays homage to the revered symbol of Turkmenistan – the Akhal-Teke horse. The Stadium has a capacity of 45,000. In addition to the Olympic Stadium, the Complex features an Indoor Velodrome with a capacity of 6,000, an Aquatics Centre (5,000) and a Tennis Centre (4,000). The Main Indoor Arena is the largest competition venue on the Ashgabat Olympic Complex with a capacity of 15,000. Located in the south portion of the Complex, the venue will host three combat sports; Wrestling, Belt Wrestling and Traditional Wrestling. In April 2017, the venue hosted an exhibition basketball event with a Harlem Wizards performance followed by a Turkmenistan vs Turkey match.

The second largest competition venue is the Ice Palace for the Futsal competition, with a capacity of 10,300. It’s one of two competition venues not located on the Ashgabat Olympic Complex, but it’s still in the vicinity at distance of less than 500m.

The Equestrian Centre is the other competition venue situated outside of the Olympic Complex. It’s in the north east of Ashgabat city, approximately 9 km from the Complex.

The Indoor Athletics Centre in the north of the Complex will host multiple sports, as it includes the bowling venue as well as the venue for chess competition. The Athletics Arena is built according to World Indoor Championships standards and has a capacity of 5,000. (Stadiaworld, 09.06.2017)
