Last year we headlined: „The dawn of a new era” – and this era has long since begun after the debilitating Covid crisis. The pandemic is over now – but that does not mean that there are no more tasks. On the contrary: the climate crisis is also a huge challenge to which sports and event venues all over the world can and must contribute. Sam Booth, for example, tells us in an exclusive interview how this challenge can be tackled. Since January this year, he has been Director of Sustainability at the operating company AEG Europe, whose portfolio includes some of the leading venues in Europe. He describes how he found his way into the industry, what his core tasks are as sustainability manager, how he is committed to sustainability professionally and privately – and he explains how venues are already tackling climate change today.

It is one of many interviews worth reading in this yearbook, which once again profiles some of the world’s leading sports venues. STADIAWORLD, for example, takes a look behind the scenes at Arthur Ashe Stadium: the largest tennis stadium in the world is the annual venue for the US Open in Queens, New York. But there are many other facilities on the grounds in Flushing Meadows that the operators take care of.

The international yearbook SPORTS VENUES 2023/24 – already the ninth edition – is a must-read for the entire sports facility industry. The English publication provides a unique overview of sports facility construction worldwide. The exclusive construction report provides the most important facts on numerous major projects around the globe. There is anything but standstill, as exemplified by the flagship projects of Real and Barca, among others. But in the USA, as usual, there is also a lot going on in terms of construction. A look across the pond reveals some gigantic projects, some of which are close to or even exceed the billion-dollar mark.

The construction report proves once again the role that major sporting events play in the willingness to invest. For example, a lot is being done in Germany, where UEFA EURO 2024 is already casting its shadow and requires some modernisation of the venues. Major events also play an important role in the context of sports venue construction in America or Asia. In the event sector, it is becoming apparent that sustainable solutions are increasingly in demand – such as in Paris, where existing venues or temporary solutions are to be predominantly used for the 2024 Olympic Games. The area of infrastructure is also covered again in this yearbook. As usual, the Tech Report deals with high-tech solutions and shows the latest technology trends and tricks of the industry.

Other topics in the yearbook include detailed portraits of internationally relevant sports and event venues as well as expert interviews and a preview of upcoming event highlights. In addition, STADIAWORLD shows the stadium landscapes of the MLS as well as the top European football leagues.
