With the help of the new installation, both the roof membrane and the interior of the stadium – including the stands – can be illuminated in different colours. According to the club, the aim of the installation was “to set the scene for the defining architectural element with the membrane roof and the support structure”. Of course, development around the globe did not stand still in the meantime. The US market leader Musco Lighting probably had the most extensive list of large projects in renowned sports facilities to work through. And here, too, some clients were inspired by the possibilities of coloured lighting. In the Boston Red Sox’ Fenway Park a new LED lighting system was installed replacing the ballpark’s HID lights, which had been in place since 1982. Due to the venue’s setting in a tightly-knit neighborhood, the luminaire assemblies were lifted into place via helicopter. The new Musco system includes colour-changing technology for cutting-edge special effects. In the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field Musco installed a custom LED system to replace the ballpark’s 35-year-old HID lights. The new system’s fixtures and structural components were painted white to blend with the ballpark’s classic light towers, and the system’s special effects controls enable each luminaire assembly to “Light the W” after wins. As a big project in Europe, SL Benfica’s Estadio da Luz, known as the “Stadium of Light,” had a new LED system from Musco installed. The new LED system complements the stadium’s sleek, modern architecture including its unique polycarbonate roof, designed to let sunlight shine through. The system includes Musco’s special effects technology creating custom light shows with colour-changing fixtures.
