Even with spikes: New solution for indoor sports surfaces

As soon as athletes take a break and leave the running track for this purpose, their spikes can severely damage the floor covering around the running track. CONICA has developed CONIPUR 3370 to solve this problem.

CONIPUR 3370 is a two-component, self-leveling, solvent-free and low-emission coating compound based on polyurethane liquid resin. It is used in indoor sports facilities as a spike-usable coating on prefabricated composite foam mats for the production of point-elastic coverings.

The occurrence of spike penetration in the infield is ultimately unavoidable. However, with CONIPUR 3370, applied with a minimum layer thickness of 4 mm, the covering can be made spike-usable. Due to the high tear resistance achieved, there is no increase in punctual damage starting from the spike penetrations and thus no progressive destruction of the surface. The spikes will “puncture” the surface over time, but these punctures will not tear open further.

According to the company CONIPUR 3370 is one of the highest quality sports hall coatings currently available. It meets the requirements of EU Directive 2004/42/EC. „CONIPUR 3370 offers good workability, excellent flow and good deaeration. Particularly noteworthy are the very high values for tensile strength, elongation at break, tear resistance and impact strength, which is the reason for the good durability of surfaces constructed with CONIPUR 3370“, CONICA explains.

CONIPUR 3370 is excellently suited as a coating for the CONIPUR HG sprint system, which is available in 9 + 4 mm and 12 + 4 mm versions. To optimize chemical resistance as well as light and color consistency, CONIPUR 3370 must always be overcoated with a sealer. The sealing is done with CONIPUR 3210 W. CONIPUR HG sprint complies with the specifications of EN 14904 and has also been successfully tested in accordance with the Norwegian specifications on “spike resistance” (NS-DIN 18032/NBI). Furthermore, CONIPUR HG sprint complies with the emission specifications according to AgBB, M1 and TÜV Premium.

Rapid processing – rapid usability

The use of the material offers many advantages: Heating is not required. Material consumption is low (4.4 kg/m2 instead of 5.0 kg/m2). The material can be applied with a single layer. The covering can be used with spikes after only seven days.

Based on experience, CONICA recommends the use of pyramid-shaped spikes no longer than 5 mm. Longer spikes or spikes of a different shape will damage the surface more and the surface may deteriorate more quickly. The steel spikes normally used for athletics running tracks are not suitable for this type of multipurpose sports hall. In heavily frequented and mechanically highly loaded areas there will be damage, but this can be repaired locally if necessary.

The coating is available in RAL 1001 (beige), RAL 1015 (light ivory), RAL 5024 (blue), RAL 6021 (green), RAL 7032 (gray). These are color values that do not exactly match the color shade mentioned. Since the surfaces have to be sealed, these colors are usually quite sufficient for indoor coatings. The coating compound can be supplied in many different color shades. (STADIAWORLD, 18.11.2022)
