Modernisations in the Motherland of Football

England is experiencing a veritable stadum constrution boom. The top clubs in particular are pushing ahead with costly projects. The 15 largest stadiums alone are aiming to increase their capacities by a total of 125,000 additional seats in the near future. stadiaworld takes a closer look at the current developments.

The former “capacity threshold” of around 60,000 seats in England appears to have been permanently broken. As recently as 2019,  only four football stadiums exceeded this barrier — commonly used to distinguish between “large” and “very large” venues. The construction of the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (2016–2019) therefore aimed for a capacity just above that mark, while Liverpool FC completed a capacity expansion of around 7,000 seats in 2024, bringing its total to 61,276 and joining this elite circle. The gap to the next-largest stadium outside this group — Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium with fewer than 53,000 seats — is also striking.
