UBS Arena: Back to the Roots
The New York Islanders returned to Long Island with the opening of the UBS Arena in November 2021. The arena, costing over 1 billion euros (approx. 1.13bn USD / 854m GBP), is the latest addition to the growing list of state-of-the-art arenas in the USA.
The ice hockey franchise New York Islanders was founded in the early 1970s and began play in the National Hockey League (NHL) in the 1972/73 season. To this day, the rivalry between the Islanders and the Rangers – rooted in Manhattan – remains the only city derby in the league. The Islanders even had to pay the Rangers a seven-figure sum as compensation for establishing themselves in their immediate neighbourhood.
