The demands placed on professional football floodlight systems have continuously increased over the past decades – essentially running parallel to developments in broadcasting and the rising standards for TV picture quality and spectators’ experience. The four-year cycles of FIFA and UEFA with marquee competitions like the European Championship and the World Cup are followed by the domestic leagues. Field lighting in Olympic stadiums is also aligned with this benchmark, as they are often used for the highest level of football competition. The same applies to rugby and American football, although the field dimensions may differ and, given the heightened requirements, sport-specific aspects are sometimes emphasized.
