Zurich’s main stadium boasts a long and varied tradition – meeting ever changing demands during its century-long history. stadiaworld looks at one of Switzerland’s most important stadiums and the developments that lie ahead for the venue.
For 100 years now, the Letzigrund area has been home to football matches and athletics competitions, and since the late 1990s also to major concerts. What began as a rudimentary sports facility on the outskirts of the city has become a multifunctional stadium that meets the most modern standards and has established itself as Zurich’s center for sports and culture. Today, it ranks among the most frequently used stadiums in the country. No otherstadium in Switzerland compares to its level of utilization, and even on a European scale, only a few are on a similar level, as stadium manager Peter Landolt explains.
