Tokyo National Stadium: Worth the wait
Despite being delayed by a year, the New National Stadium of Japan in Tokyo will attract attention during the Summer Olympics. Despite gigantic costs, its distinct design relies on wooden elements and attention to detail.
In the end, the decision was clear: When the members of the IOC voted for the venue of the Olympic Games 2020 on 7th September 2013, Tokyo was ahead of the competition from Istanbul and Madrid in the two ballots. Therewith, the gigantic sports event was awarded to the Japanese capital for the second time after 1964. Back then no one could have foreseen that the games would have to be delayed in 2020 due to a worldwide pandemic which causes numerous problems for the organising committee. The residential units of the Olympic village were already assigned for the time after the games and temporary venues also have to be newly planned.
