NBA Venues in 2026: No Sign of Stagnation

NBA arenas continue to set the standard for indoor venues worldwide. Intuit Dome is the latest example and probably what most venue operators currently aspire to. Nevertheless, standstill is far from the case, with various franchises looking to invest in modernizing or new construction. An overview.

In 2026, the NBA is still an interesting mix of older but renovated arenas and new-builds from the late 2010s and especially the turn of the millennium, with 19 of the current 30 league venues having been inaugurated between 1994 and 2005. The most noticeable outliers: Madison Square Garden and Intuit Dome. The former opened in 1968 in its location on top of Penn Station, where it still resides. Many renovations later – the latest notable one between 2011 and 2013, where the arena basically underwent a re-do with a new arena bowl and concourses – it is still that location that casts question marks over its future. Penn Station is now the busiest transportation facility in the Western hemisphere and set to undergo modernisations. In 2023, a move of the MSG was postponed and a new five-year-lease signed for the arena. It is however the shortest lease the arena ever got in its history, with questions sure to return in the coming years.
