Venues Announced for 2030 and 2031 Basketball World Cups

The FIBA has announced where the 2030 Women’s World Cup and the 2031 Men’s World Cup will be played. While the women’s teams are heading to Northeast Asia, the men’s teams will be stopping off in Western Europe.

The FIBA Central Board has awarded the hosting rights for two upcoming global basketball events. Japan will host the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2030, while France has been selected to stage the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2031. The decision followed the evaluation of both bids during a meeting in Berlin.

The Japanese capital Tokyo will host the Women’s World Cup from 26th November to 8th December 2030. The 2031 Men’s World Cup will take place from 29th August to 14th September across three French host cities: Lille, Lyon and Paris, with the final phase scheduled to be held in Paris.

Both host nations have recently organized major international sporting events, having staged the Summer Olympic Games in 2020 and 2024 respectively. Japan’s women’s national team and France’s men’s national team each won silver medals at their home Olympic tournaments.

“The FIBA World Cups have become synonymous with success in large part because selecting the appropriate host each time is the cornerstone of our mission to make basketball the most popular sports community," commented FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

“The FIBA Central Board decided that the bids by both the Japanese Basketball Association (JBA) and the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) meet the high requirements we have from a FIBA World Cup host, and has entrusted them with this big responsibility.

“Japan and France are two basketball-loving nations, two destinations extremely popular with our fans, players and partners. But what makes us more excited for both 2030 and 2031 is that really rare quality that Japan and France possess, of adding their local, unique touch of excellence and flavor to make the events truly unforgettable in time.”

Japan has previously hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2006 and staged group matches during the 2023 edition in Okinawa. The 2030 Women’s World Cup will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Japanese Basketball Association.

France will host a FIBA Basketball World Cup for the first time. The country has previously staged several international basketball events, including FIBA EuroBasket 2015 in Lille, the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2020 in Bourges, and matches of the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2021 in Strasbourg. In addition, Lyon-Villeurbanne hosted one of the qualifying tournaments for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026. (stadiaworld, 23.04.2026)
