NFL: Tottenham wants to bring Super Bowl to Europe

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur is aiming to host the Super Bowl LX. The Premier League club is planning a historic bid to bring the US mega-event to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in 2026.

In its nearly 60-year history, the National Football League’s (NFL) premier event has never been held outside the United States. After hosting several regular-season NFL games in recent years, the club now plans to bring the league’s championship game to London.

Super Bowl LVI between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals will take place on Sunday, 13th February, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and the venues for the following three Super Bowls have already been determined. According to the British newspaper Mirror, hosting the event could generate nearly 360 million euros (400m USD/ 313m GBP) in revenue for the organizers. In the U.S. alone, the game attracts peak viewership of around 100 million TV viewers.

However, holding the Super Bowl outside North America could pose significant logistical challenges due to the time difference with the United Kingdom. To accommodate the American audience, the event would need to take place in the early morning hours in England, which could lead to issues with local authorities. The traditional halftime show, known for its high volume, could cause excessive noise disturbance for local residents.

Tottenham’s 1.2 billion euros (1.33bn USD / 1.04bn GBP) stadium, specifically designed for NFL football, was inaugurated in 2019 and already has a contractual agreement with the league to host two regular-season games per year for ten years. This year, the New Orleans Saints will play one of their home games in London as part of the NFL Global Series.

Germany will also host NFL football in the coming years. The partnership begins with a regular-season game at Munich’s Allianz Arena in 2022, followed by a game at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt in 2023. Through 2025, an additional game will be played each year in the designated German NFL partner cities. (stadiaworld, 11.02.2022)
