BVB: Business results and sustainability investments
The German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has presented its results for the 2023/24 fiscal year. In addition to positive financial figures, the club announced plans to take further steps in its sustainability efforts.
BVB generated gross consolidated revenue of 639 million euros (709m USD / 556m GBP) in 2023/24, representing a 24% increase compared to the previous year (515.4 million euros (572m USD / 449m GBP)). Excluding transfer revenues, the club surpassed the 500 million euros (555m USD / 435m GBP) mark for the first time – a long-standing goal for the Black and Yellows.
"We have developed a growth dynamic that will continue in the future," commented CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke during the annual financial press conference on the figures for the fiscal year (July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024). During this period, Borussia Dortmund reached the UEFA Champions League final for the third time in its history, earning TV revenue of approximately 120 million euros (133m USD / 104m GBP) in this competition alone. Merchandising revenues totaled 48 million euros (53m USD / 42m GBP), a 43% increase. The consolidated net profit for the 2023/24 fiscal year amounted to 44.3 million euros (49m USD / 38.6m GBP), the second-highest in the club's history, compared to 9.6 million euros (11m USD / 8.4m GBP) in the previous year.

The roof of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK will soon host the largest photovoltaic system of any German stadium. This expansion is part of a collaboration with Borussia Dortmund's new sustainability partner.
As a publicly listed company, Borussia Dortmund will significantly expand its sustainability reporting from the current fiscal year onwards, in accordance with an EU directive. "We have taken this as an opportunity to reassess and realign our strategic focus, considering Borussia Dortmund's societal responsibilities and influence through a lens of sustainability," announced CFO Thomas Treß. The club’s objectives include achieving climate neutrality, improving water efficiency, and ensuring fair working conditions throughout its supply chain to uphold the values of Borussia Dortmund. Treß cited examples of completed initiatives, such as replacing the gas heating system in the football academy with heat pumps and installing a photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of the BVB FanWelt building, which covers about a quarter of its electricity needs.
A much larger project is the planned installation of a new PV system on the roof of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. "This system will generate 40% of the stadium's electricity demand, which averages 7.5 million kilowatt hours annually," said Treß. Additionally, the stadium will be connected to DEW's future climate-neutral district heating network in 2025. (stadiawold, 19.08.2024)
