Crypto.com Arena gets new centerhung scoreboard

The US electronics manufacturer Daktronics has installed a new LED display board in the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. In addition to its size, the new system is also characterised by its variable application options.

Daktronics has been contracted by Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles to manufacture and install a new centre-hanging scoreboard: a six-screen, 41.7 million pixel configuration that will hang above the court at Los Angeles Lakers, LA Kings and Los Angeles Sparks games, as well as concerts and countless other live events at the Southern California arena.

Installation began on 1 August with a team of more than 60 workers from various contractors, consultants and builders. The team worked around the clock to meet the 14 August deadline while accommodating the arena`s busy schedule to accommodate two high-profile concert dates.
The new scoreboard will be used at concerts, live events and on match days for the three resident teams from mid/late August. The updated scoreboard is also expected to enhance the digital experience, including the end-wall and ribbon displays supplied by Daktronics in 2022.
“We are thrilled to unveil a new state-of-the-art scoreboard with crisp, clear graphics and images for our fans to enjoy during Lakers, Kings and LA Sparks games and other live events at Crypto.com Arena,” said Lee Zeidman, President of Crypto.com Arena, Peacock Theatre and L.A. LIVE. “As the arena celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2024, partnering with Daktronics to present this spectacular centrepiece that brings our guests even closer to the action complements the many additional upgrades and technological advancements at this historic venue.”

Details of the centre-hung scoreboard

The main video display consists of a continuous screen that wraps around the centre-hung structure and has a pixel pitch of 3.9 millimetres. The display is approximately 8.2 metres high and has a circumference of almost 52 metres. It is capable of displaying multiple zones of digital content as required for each event. This includes live video broadcasts, instant replays, statistics and match information, graphics and animations as well as sponsorship messages.
“Crypto.com Arena is the premier venue in Los Angeles, and we are excited to provide an even better experience with the LED technology installed this year,” said Reece Kurtenbach, President and CEO of Daktronics. “This project reflects our commitment to innovation and quality while demonstrating our vision for the future of technology and its role in supporting live events. We are thrilled to see this installation come to life as it provides another exciting level of fan entertainment.”

A unique floor display is located below the main display on the centre suspended structure facing the floor below. It is approximately 5.5 metres high and wide and has a pixel pitch of 2.5 millimetres. This provides additional graphics and animations as well as the unique opportunity to show additional content at events.

Four substructure displays are mounted along each side of the lower display and face the sides and ends of the arena. Each of these displays is almost 4.2 metres high and 5 metres wide and has a pixel pitch of 2.5 millimetres. They can display complementary content to the main display while appealing to visitors seated closer to the floor.

The new centre-hung scoreboard is connected to the previously installed fascia and perimeter displays through a bespoke Daktronics control system that includes Show Control with Camino and Venus Control Suite. This control system provides a combination of display control software, world-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that provides a powerful yet user-friendly production solution. The addition of Camino to the control system provides a new level of functionality for the creation of dynamic, real-time rendered content not previously possible in a Daktronics system.
