Berlin becomes part of the FISU World University Games 2025

The new concept of the World University Games 2025 is in place, all sports and the extensive festival program are in place: The sports metropolis of Berlin will be an additional venue for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games.

Berlin has been added as a host city for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. The three sports of swimming, volleyball, and diving will take place in the sports metropolis as part of the world’s largest multi-sport event of 2025. Berlin now joins the existing host cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, and Hagen. Berlin’s established sports infrastructure ensures that the high international standards for hosting the event are met. The funding providers, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the federal government, had already approved the final program and funding concept a few weeks ago, as had the German University Sports Federation (adh) as the organizer and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). With the new concept in place, the financing is now secured.

Iris Spranger, Berlin’s Senator for Internal Affairs and Sports, stated: “We are proud to be part of the largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games and to once again experience international top-level sports in the capital. For the sports metropolis of Berlin, it is a given that we support the organizers and funding providers to ensure that swimming, diving, and volleyball can take place. Berlin has the infrastructure to step in even within this tight timeframe. We can host the competitions at the highest international level sustainably by using proven sports venues. We are demonstrating once again that Germany is an excellent and reliable host of major international sporting events.”

“We are very pleased that the sports metropolis Berlin is supporting our concept, and we now finally have planning certainty,” said Niklas Börger, CEO of Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games gGmbH. “Athletes and fans from around the world can look forward to the sports event of the year and a huge party in the heart of the Ruhr region and Berlin. At the end of September, we will provide further insights into the content of our event.”

The hosting of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games is now secured. More information will be provided at a press event in late September, which, following the conclusion of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will heighten anticipation for the next major multi-sport event, which will take place right in the heart of Germany.

Mahmut Özdemir, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, added: “As a passionate sports nation and globally recognized host, Germany is a professional when it comes to organizing major international sporting events. With the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, we continue on our strategic path, which we have successfully followed with the hosting of the 2022 European Championships in Munich, the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, and the upcoming UEFA EURO 2024. And we are also great at bridging regions: the West-East axis between Rhine-Ruhr and Berlin worked perfectly for the Finals 2023 and the 2022 Basketball European Championship. I am grateful that the state of Berlin is taking on the challenge of supporting the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rhine-Ruhr region in hosting the 32nd FISU World University Games in Germany. Together, the Rhine-Ruhr region and Berlin will prove that a multi-location concept is modern and sustainable. It will be another showcase for Germany as a sports nation, which now, with the full backing of the entire federal government, seeks to bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

In the four Ruhr area cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, and Mülheim an der Ruhr, which have been planned as host cities for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games from the beginning, there is satisfaction that the concept is now finalized. “Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, and Mülheim an der Ruhr, with their unique backdrops and the sports enthusiasm of the people in the region, will impress both athletes and visiting fans. We can all look forward to unforgettable games with friends,” said Essen’s Mayor Thomas Kufen. (STADIAWORLD, 02.09.2024)
