Arsenal FC's Net-Zero Goal approved
Arsenal FC has received an officially approved climate neutrality target. By 2040, the club aims to drastically reduce direct and indirect emissions to decouple economic growth from rising CO₂ emissions.
The North London club announced that it is, according to its own statement, the "world's only football club" with an officially approved Net-Zero target from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Four years ago, Arsenal committed to becoming climate neutral by 2040 as part of the UN's "Sports for Climate Action Framework."
As part of its sustainability strategy, Arsenal has set specific goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across three categories: Scope 1, 2, and 3. Scope 1 includes direct emissions from club operations, such as heating systems and vehicles. Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions from the club's energy consumption. Scope 3 covers other indirect emissions, such as those from purchased products or employee commuting.
A central aspect of the plan is to reduce emissions intensity, which measures the ratio of greenhouse gases released to the club’s economic activity. Arsenal aims to cut its indirect emissions per 1.19 million euros (approx. 1m GBP / 1.26m USD) by 52% by 2030 compared to 2021 revenue levels. By 2040, this figure is expected to drop by 97%. The club's goal is to decouple future economic growth from increased emissions and sustainably reduce emissions intensity.
The program, which is already in progress, includes the following targets:
By 2030:
- Reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% (compared to 2021).
- Decrease the intensity of Scope 3 emissions by 52%.
By 2040:
- Cut Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% (compared to 2021).
- Reduce the intensity of Scope 3 emissions by 97%.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's Managing Director, commented on the goals: "We are in a privileged position where our actions can inspire global change. Our aim is to drive sustainability together with our staff, fans, and communities worldwide. Reducing our carbon footprint is central to our club strategy."
Hannah Mansour, Director of ESG, added: "We are proud that our Net-Zero target has been approved by the SBTi. This highlights our commitment to transparency and the consistent reduction of our carbon footprint. We continue to actively reduce emissions throughout our entire value chain and collaborate with partners to help our communities adapt to the impacts of climate change."

In line with the SBTi standards, Arsenal's Net-Zero plan focuses on the following measures:
- Reducing and decarbonizing energy consumption at the Emirates Stadium, the Sobha Realty Training Centre, the academy building, and offices. The club relies on 100% renewable energy.
- Lowering emissions from travel and transportation, including club travel, employee commuting, and product deliveries via Arsenal Direct. The club also aims to promote more sustainable travel options for fans, although this is not included in the SBTi targets.
- Minimizing waste and improving recycling, including waste reduction on match days and efficient water usage.
- Collaborating with suppliers and partners to set decarbonization targets and reduce emissions from purchased goods and services, as well as from product sales, including licensed items like jerseys.
Moreover, educating and raising awareness on sustainability issues remains a core component of Arsenal's strategy to promote positive changes in communities in North London and worldwide. (stadiaworld, 18.11.2024)
