Bilbao: A special stadium for a special club
Athletic Bilbao marches to the beat of its own drum but still manages to keep up on an international level. The Basque stadium is one of the UEFA EURO 2020 venues. Stadionwelt presents San Mamés.
For 100 years “La Catedral” has been the home of Athletic Bilbao. To some extent, the club defies the trends of modern professional football: the club only relies on Basque players—despite this extreme self-imposed geographical restriction Athletic has been continuously playing in the Spanish league since 1928. Only the Spanish elite clubs Real Madrid and FC Barcelona can match this achievement. Moreover, Bilbao claimed the title of champion eight times and cup winner 24 times. In addition, the Basques reached the final of the UEFA Europa League in 2012.
