Olympia 2024: Sustainability in focus
At the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, sustainability was a key focus. The city addressed environmental and climate challenges associated with hosting major sports events.
Reducing the Carbon Footprint
Paris 2024 reduced the carbon footprint of the Games by 54.6% compared to London 2012 and Rio 2016, achieving a carbon footprint of 1.59 million tons of CO2 equivalent (teqCO2). This was accomplished through a comprehensive approach that included all emission sources (Scopes 1, 2, and 3), such as construction, operations, and travel. The success of Paris 2024 is attributed to the fact that emission reductions were planned in advance, rather than relying on post-event carbon compensation, as was the case in previous Olympic Games.
Sustainable Construction
To limit CO2 emissions in construction, Paris 2024 focused on using existing or temporary infrastructure. Only one permanent competition venue (the Olympic Aquatics Centre) and two major "Living" venues (the Athlete and Media Village) were specifically built for the Games. These buildings used low-carbon materials such as wood, recycled materials, and low-emission concrete, which significantly reduced emissions. For temporary infrastructure, reuse was prioritized: 40% of the spectator stands were made from wood, and resources were consolidated to minimize waste.
Operational Optimizations
Paris 2024 implemented several operational measures that resulted in significant emissions reductions. Nearly 100% of the energy for the Games came from renewable sources, reducing the need for carbon-intensive diesel generators. This was also evident in catering, where the focus was on plant-based options, with 40% of meals for the public being vegetarian, reducing the CO2 footprint of food. In addition, the number of digital devices was reduced by 29%, and more than 75% of the technology was rented, minimizing waste through recycling and reuse.
Travel Emissions
While it was initially expected that travel would account for about one-third of the CO2 footprint of the Games, it ultimately turned out that travel was responsible for 53% of the total CO2 footprint. Measures to reduce this impact included promoting the use of public transport or active mobility for local spectators. International visitors were encouraged to use lower-carbon modes of transport such as trains. Overall, 87% of spectators used public transport, bicycles, or walked to events.
CO2 Avoidance and Capture Projects
For emissions that could not be avoided, Paris 2024 invested €11.5 million in international climate protection projects that meet the highest CO2 storage standards, such as forest protection and photovoltaic installations. In France, carbon sequestration projects through reforestation were also supported to offset a total of 1.59 million teqCO2.
Circular Economy
Paris 2024 followed the principles of a circular economy by reducing waste and promoting reuse. Over 90% of event equipment, such as sports gear and uniforms, was reused, recycled, or donated. Notably, 600,000 meals from surplus food were distributed to those in need, and the use of single-use plastics was reduced by more than 70% compared to London 2012.
Sustainability Models for the Future
Beyond the Games, Paris 2024 leaves a legacy in the form of tools and guides for future events. Sustainability models and documents—such as eco-design guidelines and the “Events Climate Coach” tool—are now available to help other organizers adopt more sustainable practices. Through these resources, Paris 2024 ensures that its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of large events will continue to inspire and guide global event organizers.
