Coldplay Breaks Record for Stadium Concerts

The British band Coldplay has broken the record for the largest stadium concerts of the 21st century with two shows at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. These performances also marked the band's first concerts in India.

The India concerts were part of the global "Music of the Spheres" World Tour, which began in March 2022. According to several reports, Coldplay has sold more tickets than any other band or artist before – selling a total of 10.3 million tickets by December 2024. In January alone, Coldplay performed four nights at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), three nights at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai (India), and two shows at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

On January 25 and 26, Coldplay performed in front of 111,581 fans on the first night and 111,989 fans on the second night at the Narendra Modi Stadium – totaling over 223,000 spectators for the two-night concert. With this, Coldplay narrowly surpassed the previous record held by George Strait, who performed in front of 110,905 fans at Kyle Field at Texas A&M University in the summer of 2024. According to several media reports, Coldplay has now hosted the best-selling tour of the 21st century.

The "Music of the Spheres" World Tour is a global "phenomenon," filling stadiums across five continents. About half of the 175 concerts took place in Europe, where 5.2 million tickets were sold across 87 shows. In South America, 1.8 million tickets were sold, in North America 1.6 million, in Asia 884,000, and in Australia 848,000. By mid-December 2024, Coldplay had sold over 100,000 tickets at more than half of the tour stops and had earned a total of 1.19bn EUR (1,25bn. USD / 1bn. GBP).

The tour continues in April with concerts in Hong Kong, China, and Seoul, before returning to North America. The finale is currently planned with ten sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium in London. (stadiaworld, 29.01.2025)
