Avicii Arena in Stockholm officially reopened

The Avicii Arena in Stockholm was extensively remodelled last year. The official reopening of the swedish multifunctional arena took place on 1st February 2025 with a concert in front of a sold-out audience.

On 4th March 2022, the company that owns the Avicii Arena announced that the domed building named after the late DJ will be renovated in close consultation with Stockholm City Council. The arena, which opened in 1989, no longer met the modern requirements of a multifunctional arena, which is why a comprehensive renovation and modernisation of the Avicii Arena was essential, especially in view of the Ice Hockey World Championships in May 2025, which will be held in Sweden and Denmark.

Following the completion of the construction phase, the completely modernised arena was reopened on 1st February with a concert by Swedish band Kite. The new, movable acoustic panels, the modernised rooms and the extended event areas were presented to around 16,000 spectators for the first time.

The modernisation measures were planned by an international team consisting of an American and a Danish architecture firm, as well as a consulting German engineering office. The Scandinavian construction company NCC carried out the work. SGAF (wholly owned by the City of Stockholm) is the client.

The new features of the modernised arena include a retractable roof, which enables the arena to host all kinds of music and sporting events, a completely new acoustic system and a modern lighting system. A steel ring construction supports the movable system of acoustic panels and the rigging system. The seating has also been completely renovated, with new seats, standing areas and lounges. It is now also possible to sit much closer to the ice or the stage. It was important that the modernisation went hand in hand with the preservation oft he architectural heritage.

The modernisation of the Avicii Arena means that Stockholm can continue to host sporting events and concerts on an international scale. The modernisation follows the city's sustainable approach of preserving and further developing existing buildings. The spherical building is, of course, a flagship of the Swedish capital.
