How the NHL wants to bring back international matches
The successful replacement of the NHL All-Star Game with a national competition (“4 Nations Face-Off“) brings the NHL’s international ambitions back into focus. Not only will the International Games be expanded, but the league also plans to establish its own World Championship.
In 1938, the NHL first embarked on an international tour. The destination: Europe. The Detroit Red Wings and the Montréal Canadiens played nine games in England and France as part of a preseason tour. Since then, numerous additional games have been played, with regular season games now regularly taking place internationally, primarily in Europe. Similar to the National Football League, which has significantly increased its International Games, North America's premier ice hockey league now plans to target the international market even more. With a World Championship organized outside the international federation, the NHL would take this a step further and put European leagues under pressure.
