Auckland decides in favour of renovating Eden Park
Auckland City Council has decided in favour of renovating Eden Park and thus against building a new national stadium. New Zealand's largest stadium is to be renovated in stages at a total cost of 550 million NZ-dollars.
There have been repeated plans to modernise Eden Park in the past. Now the Auckland City Council has voted in favour of renovating the largest stadium in New Zealand with a capacity of around 50,000 spectators – in regular operation, it mainly hosts rugby and cricket matches, but concerts have also been held at Eden Park. Under the project name ‘Eden Park 2.1’, the privately owned stadium is to be renovated in stages. The plans for a new national stadium called Quay Park on the waterfront have therefore been cancelled for the time being.
