In 2025, the NFL is expanding its venue portfolio and is making stops at three new stadiums: the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Croke Park in Dublin and the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. stadiaworld takes a closer look at these NFL debutants.
Almost 20 years ago, on 2 October 2005, the National Football League (NFL) ventured into uncharted territory. For the first time in its history, the league played a regular season game outside the United States. Under the name “NFL Fútbol Americano”, the Arizona Cardinals defeated the San Francisco 49ers in front of 103,467 spectators at the Estadio Azteca.
In retrospect, the match marked the beginning of a genuine success story. Although the NFL had already organized games outside the USA and even overseas before, these were exclusively pre-season games. The interest in the “NFL Fútbol Americano” clearly sparked a vision within the league: regular season games beyond US borders.
