Royal opening of new sports hall

On the 30th October, Princess Anne’s helicopter landed on the school field of the Samuel Ward Academy, in Haverhill, UK. Her timely visit highlighted the official opening of the new sports hall, which is designed by the company SMC2.

Princess Anne said: “I can see that sport is no stranger to this school and the academy have invested more in it, which is a pleasure to see.” The brand new sports hall has been designed for the practice of different sports: netball, cricket, basketball and badminton. Because of its fastening and tensioning system to apply the textile membrane on a wood and steel structure, this building represents a new generation of covered buildings. The construction system developed by the French company SMC2, is aimed reduce natural resources and energy expense at the construction phase as also during operation, while ensuring the best playing conditions. The English Partner of SMC2, the company Doe Sport, erected the building and installed the sport equipment.

The building shall be designed to reduce its environmental impact by specifically using materials with a low carbon footprint: recyclable steel, wood from sustainably managed forests and 100 percent recyclable textile membrane. During its lifetime the building requires only a small proportion of energy with a maximum use of daylight and by reducing heating costs. The translucence of the membrane ensures consistent natural light without glare effect or shadow and a well-tempered indoor climate. Additionally, the curved shape of the canopy and the textile structure offer acoustic comfort. (Stadiaworld, 12.11.2012)
